KUALA LUMPUR – Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today affirmed that Malaysia will go ahead with its procurement of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 12.

He said this came after the medical panel of United States government advisers endorsed the vaccine for kids two days ago.

The independent experts concluded the known benefits – directly to kids’ health but also in ending disruptions to schooling and other areas – outweighed the known risks.

Khairy added that Malaysia will look at other options such as the Sinovac shot.

“82.4% of our adolescents (are) partially vaccinated. 62% fully vaccinated. This will mean #ReopeningSchools safely. With (the) FDA panel recommending Pfizer jab for 5-12 yo, Malaysia will go forward with our procurement of Pfizer for kids. We will also look at other options like Sinovac,” he tweeted this morning.

As at 11.59pm yesterday, 1,951,450 (62%) adolescents are fully vaccinated and 640,598 (20.4%) are partially vaccinated.

Meanwhile, 24,165,940 are fully vaccinated in Malaysia (74% of the total population) and 1,265,388 (3.9%) are partially vaccinated, according to data available on the CovidNow website.

It is estimated that Malaysia will have 80% of its population fully jabbed in mid-December. – The Vibes, October 29, 2021
